My personal grievance is to do with parking. Here's the text of a
letter I sent to Sutton Council. Feel free to make use of any or all of it
if you are the victim of unfair parking enforcement, either in Sutton or any
where else in the country.
I am
writing to express my outrage and disgust at the Council’s parking policy.
On Saturday 28 February I parked in Gander Green Lane, an unrestricted parking
area. However, due to the
narrowness of the road I left my vehicle with two wheels on the kerb, in a way
which caused no obstruction or danger to either pedestrians or other road users.
I believed that I was acting responsibly in doing this.
I was therefore shocked and appalled to have been issued with a parking
penalty. I have since discovered that this practice occurs frequently
in roads throughout the Borough.
Clearly the issue of a penalty in this case is symptomatic of a wider, more
sinister trend which has been going on for some time:
Councils are using their powers to extort money from innocent citizens in
a way which is more typical of third world kleptocratic governments, such as
Nigeria, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to go about one’s normal,
every day business, without incurring stupid, pointless penalties.
In fact, parking has become a racket, and the Council’s behaviour would
be more understandable if it were part of an organised crime syndicate.
History has shown that governments which try to govern without the consent of
the people will ultimately fail, and as a council you are clearly trying to
alienate a large proportion of the population of the Borough. Reasonable enforcement of rules designed to promote the
welfare of the population at large is acceptable, but petty minded bureaucratic
theft from decent, hard working and considerate motorists is morally repugnant,
and will result in the hatred and loathing of the council and all it stands for
by large numbers of people.
A copy of this correspondence and your reply, if any, will be sent to all local
papers in the hope that an orchestrated campaign can be started, which will
culminate in the ending of the acts of petty larceny which the council now
commits on a daily basis.
I have sent this letter to you without the use of a stamp, but I would expect
that the success of the legalised theft you routinely engage in will mean that
your Mafia like organisation can easily afford the cost of the postage.
I sent
60 copies of this letter, one to each councillor, and any bureaucrats who might
have any interest in parking, without postage. The idea was that the
revenue that they gained from the ticket would be reduced by having to pay the
charges for receiving the letters.
